Gun Shot
Kativik Regional Police Force
On Saturday March 2, 2013, Cst. Steve Dery, a 3 year member of the Kativik Regional Police Force in Northern Quebec was shot and killed while responding to a domestic dispute. His partner was wounded in the shoot-out.
Cst. Dery, 27 years, was responding to a domestic dispute in the small community of Kuujjuak, Quebec, which is approximately 1,600 kilometres northeast of Montreal. A man and woman were at the home when as police arrived. Shots were fired as soon as they stepped out of their police vehicle hitting both officers. The officers were transported to hospital where Cst. Dery died of his injuries. A stand-off ensued until Sunday when police found the man in the home with apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The woman escaped with no injury.
Cst. Dery was originally from Orleans in the Ottawa Ontario area. He joined the Kativik Regional Police, which was created in 1996 to serve communities in Nunavik, which comprises the northern third of the Province. He was the second of three boys born of a former RCMP officer. His brother is a fire-fighter and he has a cousin who is with the RCMP in New Brunswick.
