Cpl. Gibson was killed when his unmarked patrol car was struck from behind on the Trans-Canada Highway near Medicine Hat, Alberta. Cpl. Gibson was acting as an escort for the Terry Fox Run marathon and was driving slowly behind the runners, in the right lane, when a tractor trailer struck his patrol car from behind at a high rate of speed.

He was killed on his first day of duty as a military police officer after graduating from the military police academy in Borden, Ontario.
