November 13, 2004

Vehicular assault

RCMP Auxiliary, Vernon

Vernon RCMP Cst. Glen Evely was killed when the cruiser in which he was riding was struck by a stolen truck. Evely was in the passenger seat of the cruiser when a black pickup truck, stolen in Armstrong BC, ran a red light early Saturday morning. A 44-year-old constable who was driving the police car remained in serious but stable condition in a Kelowna hospital Sunday.

Police said the 18-year-old male driver of the truck and a 16-year-old female passenger were hospitalized with undetermined injuries. Witnesses said the vehicles flew through the air, the truck landing on its roof. The investigation continues with charges pending against the driver who remains in Vernon hospital under police guard, as well as the female passenger who has been released from hospital.

Cst. Evely had served with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for 2 years and leaves behind a wife and two young children, age four and seven.
