Gunshot

Edmonton Police Service

On March 16, 2023 at just after midnight Edmonton Police Service West Branch patrol officers Cst. Brett Ryan and Cst. Travis Jordan were dispatched to a domestic dispute at an apartment complex in the area of 114 Avenue and 132 Street. Upon arrival they spoke to the caller of the domestic dispute (the mother of the suspect) outside the complex. As the officers approached the suite, they were both shot multiple times by the young male suspect at the door. The officers were ambushed and were unable to discharge their firearms. The officers were unaware that the suspect had access to firearms as it was not mentioned in the call. The suspect and his mother then got into an altercation during which time she was shot as well. The suspect then turned the gun on himself and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The two officers were rushed to hospital but were declared dead upon arrival. The mother of the suspect was also taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.

Cst. Brett Ryan was a 5-year member of the Edmonton Police Service. He was always willing to give back, helping young hockey officials develop their skills. He was a paramedic before joining the Edmonton Police Service. He was passionate about his work and his duty to serve the community. Brett was married to Ashley who was a paramedic. Ashley was pregnant with their first child.

Our condolences go out to Ashley, his family, friends, and colleagues. He will be remembered.
