Cst. Chris Garrett an 18-year veteran of policing, 13 years with the Cobourg Police Service, was killed in the line of duty in the early morning hours of May 15, 2004. The investigation has revealed that approximately 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning, Cst. Garrett responded to a 911 call that an individual had been robbed in the parking lot of the old Cobourg hospital at the intersection of Darcy and Chapel Streets. While Cst. Garrett questioned the individual, two other Cobourg officers who had attended the call began a search of the area for a suspect in the reported robbery. Shortly afterwards, additional 911 calls were received at the Cobourg Police Service reporting gun shots were heard at this location. The officers immediately returned to Cst. Garrett’s last location and found him fatally wounded in the parking lot.
Const. Garrett is the first Cobourg police officer to die in the line of duty and is survived by his wife Denise, his stepdaughter Britany, and his son Ben.
